There are many ways to support First Step of Sarasota—cash, stocks and securities, matching gifts, real estate and personal property to name a few. First Step is a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization and gifts are tax deductible. Contact the Marketing Department at 941-552-2065 for more information.
You may make a gift in memory or in honor of individuals that you wish to recognize. Memorial and honorary gifts can be made to the Annual Fund or to another designated fund (see list below).
Annual Fund – supports First Step’s operations and programs
Sandy Seidman Second Step Fund – named for late Board member Sandy Seidman, donations to this fund support one-time scholarships to graduates of First Step’s Mothers & Infants program as they transition to independent living. Typically, the funding supports infant supplies/furniture, deposits for apartments or utilities, child care costs, transportation or initial food or furnishing costs.

Some First Step clients arrive with nothing more than the clothes on their back. While each residential program varies, First Step provides basic items for clients to use during their stay. Occasionally, these items become worn and need replacing. A general list of “wish list” items is below.
- Toiletries – liquid soaps, shampoos, and other personal hygiene care items – all must be alcohol free!
- Linens – towels, twin-sized bedding
- Pillows – New
- Infant Care Items – Baby blankets, clothing (must be limited to smaller sizes due to storage constraints), changing table supplies (protective pads and terry cloth mattress coverings).
First Step holds the Caring Hearts Luncheon each February to support Mothers & Infants. Planning for this event takes a great deal of support from members of the community. Support can come in the form of event sponsorships, personal event reservations, donated in-kind items that can be used for silent auctions and raffles, as well as personal involvement. In 2013, First Step launched a First Step Alumni Association, or FSAA, with goals of keeping program graduates engaged in recovery, strengthening support networks and providing fun, social, sober activities. FSAA has elected a board of officers that are organizing monthly events, some held off-campus (at a park, the beach or other venue) and some held at First Step with the intent of attracting current clients to the group upon their graduation.
