A key to understanding substance abuse, addiction, prevention of substance abuse and treatment is the acceptance of the addiction as a disease. While many individuals can have a drink or two and stop, others can not simply stop drinking. The same is true for illegal drugs. To discontinue use is not a simple matter of choice for the addict. Those who are diagnosed with an addiction have developed a physical and psychological dependence on the substance they abuse.
By definition, addiction is the compulsive physiological need for and use of a habit-forming substance (such as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal; broadly: persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be physically, psychologically or socially harmful.
Treatment options for addiction often begin with a period of detox, which is generally followed by either residential or outpatient care. Recovery programs vary in length, size of facilities and price. The most important factor is finding a program that is right for you or your loved one.
